OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS NEEDED TO WORK IN MALLORCA (and Spain) A guide to help you obtain the NIE and SS NUMBERS If you are considering living and working in Mallorca you must allow time to obtain the official paperwork that will allow you to do just that. The NIE number is a tax number without which you cannot work or make any major financial transaction. The SS number is the one that proves you have registered your intention to work. All employers require you to have these numbers in place before they will employ you.

The starting point is the NIE number which you can obtain in person from the Oficina de Extranjeria, Poligono Levante, C/Ciutat de Queretaro s/n, 07007 Palma.

You need to be there with your passport from 9 am. You will be given a form to complete which then needs to be taken to the local bank and a fee of 6.70 euros paid. The stamped document then needs taking back to the Oficina de Extranjeria and you will be issued with the NIE document. This process could take a few hours although lately the system seems to have become more streamlined. You cannot obtain this document without your original current passport – a photocopy will not do.

The Social Security office in central Palma is the office that issues the SS number and document. You must take your newly aquired NIE number plus your passport and present them at the Social Security office and complete a form. You will then be given the document with that important number on.

It is possible to obtain these documents without speaking Spanish but the staff in both offices do not speak English fluently. You might find it helpful to take a Spanish speaking friend with you.

It is possible to obtain the NIE number from England using a Sun Search Representative in Mallorca to act for you. This service carries a fee and can take up to six weeks before you obtain the documentation. There is a cost before you hand it over to the Spanish side of thing as your passport has to be copied and notorised. The Spanish authorities will accept a notarised copy of the passport. There are Notaries in all major English towns and the cost for this service, paid direct to them, varies between 40 – 100 pounds. Notaries can be found on Notary web sites. Add to that the cost of the Representative here who stands in line for these documents for you which is around 110 euros, plus the 6.70 euros for the NIE number and the total cost for this service works out at 200 pounds (approx).

Employers expect these numbers to be in place and indeed often ask us not to send people forward to them for consideration unless they have them. The choice of how you obtain these documents is yours. The best way forward is to be present in Mallorca and visit the offices yourself with 6.70 euros and your passport . Using our representative is a service we are pleased to offer but the Notary costs from England can make this a prohibitive amount.

We have outlined the system for your information and although it appears complicated it is not. You literally can start at 9 o clock and have both these documents in your possession by 2 p.m. the same day.
