Changing Places Week 141 W/C 2nd November 2008

The hamlet of Biniaraix lies beneath Fornalutx snuggled into the mountains that surround it. In the dark, without even the whiteness of the church spire to lighten your way it can be considered a spooky place. And so it was on Halloween, all paths led to the house of horrors and especially the one that was haunted. The children, all forty of them and their parents gathered in costumes, excited yet afraid of what the night might bring. The ghostly pumpkins with their too bright smiles and the flickering candles all added to the atmosphere. The hostess that everyone knows and loves was wearing red devils wings - oh dear - yet still she presided over the pizza. Was everyone going to have a terrible spell woven on the food? The pizza delivery to this terrible place came from the relative sanity of Soller - it can only be said that he left very quickly after unloading the boxes. Soller people don't do Halloween - this was an incomer's weird festival in his book.

Weird or not the devils, witches, pirate witches and the odd rogue princess mingled with the skeletons and looked suitably scary. The make up must have taken hours and that was just on the men!  Admiring of costumes and children's food over, the night began to unravel, first it was the `trick or treat' in the three houses that surrounded the haunted house. A procession followed and chants of `trick or treat, trick or treat give me something nice to eat' resounded through the Soller valley. Bags were filled with sweets and then it was time for the house of horrors to reveal its secrets.

Dracula, a hanging man, a mad professor and an undertaker were waiting to catch the children unawares.  What a fantastic set our actor and film set creators had made. The house had taken a week to build with three rooms and props that wouldn't have been out of place in Hollywood. The mad professor sawed arms off, Dracula's teeth needed avoiding at all costs , the hanging man was altogether too lifelike as he was hanging a foot of the floor and no one wants to see the undertaker.  The oldest kids were very blasé until they got in the door, little children had to dig deep into their reserves of courage and take their mums with them - just in case.  This was a production by the talents of Actors and set designers Drew Donovan and Tommy Carter which left the audience begging for more. A huge success - worthy of an Oscar at least.

Out of the darkness and into the Light Box Bench world.  Which Mallorca town council is going to be the first to bite on the product that is taking the UK by storm? The carbon footprint of electricity generated advertising is under deep scrutiny and alternatives are being actively sought. The Light Box Bench with its solar powered advertising panels is now being installed in B&Q as well as Asda to advertise goods and services. National advertisers are queuing up to advertise their products on the bench and the whole project, in the words of one advertising senior executive is `this is a no - brainer - success is guaranteed'. The green debate has already been won - the battle is over. Mallorca is its first launch pad outside the UK. The inventor lives in the Costa Blanca and he and I are racing to get the first installation in Spain.  The product makes money for individuals representing the benches and selling the advertising. So which cutting edge local authority is going to invite us in for a meeting and presentation?

I am delighted to say that it is the Mayor of our town in Soller who is the first to realise the amazing possibilities of this product.  So as this paper hits the news stands today we will be in our own Town Hall making a `green' case to the important powers that be in our own community. A business opportunity that has room for individuals to make money and the business community to show their commitment to reducing their carbon footprint by using the solar powered Light Box Bench!
