Changing Places No 125 W\C 6th July 2008

The Business Brokers lot is a mixture of hope, disappointment and managing expectations. The phone rings off the hook, an impatient, breathless man from somewhere in the UK. ‘I wanna buy a bar, got about 20000€ - don’t give me any old rubbish – I know that bars in Majorca are overpriced’. All this said before he’s even drawn breath makes me despair of our fellow countrymen. We take a deep breath, offer them the courtesy of our ears, listen carefully, and make notes and then suggestions. The first is that they should hop on a plane and come and visit the premises that they have seen on our website. Communication is wonderful these days, the story is told and pictures are shown on the website. If they took the trouble to read the information most of their questions are answered before they have had time to form the question. The main point of the call seems to be that they need to tell the Agent that they are worldly wise and won’t put up with Agent’s rubbish. Give us strength – professional business brokers like us at Sun Search Acquisitions deal in the truth and will help and assist in whatever way we can. All this abuse and getting their retaliation in first seems to be an indication of a desperate lot of people, very stressed, needing to leave the UK before they turn the lights out. For every one of those, there are of course, the serious, intelligent buyers who make the job worthwhile. We look forward to welcoming them for the beginning of the business selling season in September. In the meantime a holiday maybe…….

We have just had a few days that give credence to the accusation that living in Majorca means you are on permanent holiday. We celebrated with our friends the renewal of their marriage vows on their tenth wedding anniversary. The location was high in the mountains behind Soller in the Sa Figera area. A Majorcan house of great splendour and beauty and the view of the Port of Soller is unsurpassed. As the sun went down the sunset was worthy of applause and the lights of the Port provided an unforgettable sight. We gingerly left the party winding our way down the mountain scratching the side of the car en-route. I am sure that the car bodywork repairers of Soller raise their glasses to my husband’s driving, narrow mountain paths and small streets. Their workshops will never be empty!

We abandoned the car and left the Port of Soller by boat to join 3000 other people in Sa Colobra for the concert. The gorge was full of people swaying and clapping to the gospel sounds of The Bronzeville American Gospel Group. The towering mountains of the gorge made a wonderful backdrop and provided much needed shade to the concert goers. Half the audience were in their swimming costumes and when the going got a bit too hot a cooling dip in the sea refreshed their bodies as the music swept over their souls. We all sang along with ‘Down by the riverside’ and got our clapping refined to a fine art. The sail back to the Port of Soller at 8 o clock was glorious, cool and rounded off a perfect day.

Earlier this year I had a ‘significant’ birthday and friends bought me vouchers for treatments at a wonderful spa. They weren’t saying I desperately needed them or anything subtle like that so Jay and I had a mother and daughter day at Reads and their Vesuvian Spa. There are some places that are so cool that words don’t do them justice. The whole experience of having the place to ourselves – a clever illusion - and the wonderful treatments gave me a third perfect day in a row. The place is the last word in luxury and the attention to detail in the treatment areas was the signature of a great spa designer. A word for the shower suite where you start in a mist of water and end in an ice room, passing sauna and steam and foot reflexology on the way. A little lunch and girlie chat followed by massage and drifting off into a peaceful world where no one shouts or makes unrealistic demands. Such peace……….. Back to work tomorrow we aren’t on holiday all the time – honestly.
