‘All you need is love’ we sang at a beautiful wedding in Deya on Saturday. The Georgie Insull singers were in fine voice for their first wedding of the year. The church at the top of the hill in Deya is a favourite choice of many couples and it is no hardship to sing in that lovely church set amidst the most spectacular scenery in the world. Sightseers sitting outside the church could not believe their ears as a rousing rendition of ‘Jerusalem’ surrounded them which was worthy of the ‘last night at the proms’. ‘Ave Maria’ sung by our superb soloists ensured there was not a dry eye in the house or outside it for those sitting on the wall. ‘You raise me up’ might have been made famous by Westlife but the Georgie Insull version comes a creditable second! The wedding was full of beautiful people and amongst them was Sir Richard Branson. Georgie Insull was in full throttle and suggested there and then that the choir audition for Virgin records. He was very polite and gave his charming smile and accepted the choir’s business card. The phone hasn’t rung yet this week but we can live in hope and keep practising!
The choir’s details are definitely on file at Island Star cruises and we went on board to discuss this year’s itinerary for the cruise in May that features ‘The Georgie Insull Singers’as an entertainment attraction. The Island Star’s choir takes shape under Georgie’s direction and as the week goes on the passengers practice hard and become good enough to perform in the talent show. Not so much Von Trapp as Von Georgie……….The sing a long evenings where the choir has been known to lose its inhibitions is another repeat that the cruise directors are keen to repeat. The singers have a serious engagement in all this when the ship docks in Rome we are off to sing in church….whether we sing in more than one depends on whether the Pope is reading this today! We are a versatile bunch that can change the mood with the music and now that we are featured as cruise ship entertainers we really ought to think of appointing an agent. Sir Richard might just be qualified enough. He just needs to pick up that phone – he’s got the number.
The back lanes of Soller leading down to the Port is a great Sunday afternoon walk which this week had its dramas. I came upon a little girl aged about three in an isolated lane with no-one else about. She told me in Spanish that she wanted me to ring the doorbell of the nearby house because she wanted to go in. I rang the bell and waited but there was no reply. I asked her where her mummy was and where her house was and she pointed up the mountain above Soller so we made little progress. What do you do in this situation? The streets of Soller are safe – we believe - but a three year old, alone in a country lane could not be left as far as I was concerned. I rang the bells in other houses but there was no response from any of them. The story ends happily enough because eventually, half an hour later I went into the local pottery shop and the little girl’s mum was working there. All’s well that ends well I suppose but the episode left me with nagging doubts. This is a tourist area, who knows who is walking down the lanes and little children out of the sight of adults are vulnerable. A shiver of apprehension spoilt my walk and the ‘what could have happened’ played on my mind all afternoon.
The family arrived for dinner and first stop was a hot bath as they had come straight from the beach and swimming in the sea. My family are still in the half and half stages of their relocation. They have got to be Brits to be swimming in the sea in April – no self respecting Majorcan would put their toe in the water yet. They are still wearing their leather jackets for goodness sake! The weather here at the moment is so glorious that it is tempting to believe that summer has already arrived. Last weekend in Madrid it was so cold that I bought a scarf and gloves and wore them the whole time. This weekend Trev is playing with the swimming pool and starting the intensive clean ready for the first swim of the year which could be any day now. Look at us – North London to North Majorca with all the benefits.
