Changing Places Week 154 W/C 1st February 2009

There was only one place to be on Saturday morning and that was the Pauline Quirke Academy in Portals to see what it was all about.  Jay took Kate and joined the 150 or so other people for the workshops and speeches for the new drama opportunity in our midst.  When you are eight and into High School Musical, a teacher that leads you through the moves and gets you singing those songs guarantee the `feel good' factor for the day.  Pauline Quirke gave a speech you couldn't fault about how her establishment was about building confidence through drama and having fun.  Not for this group the stress of performance or not being chosen for the main part.   The North London connections came through big time with Anna Scher drama school in Islington being the starting point for Pauline Quirke and also Lucy De Bruce - the dance teacher.  This was the same Drama school that Jay went to when she was the same age as Kate is now.  The connections didn't stop there because if you were a young thespian in North London eventually all roads led to Mountview Drama School which is where Lucy and Jay's paths had crossed again and they spent all their spare time in an environment that Pauline Quirke is trying to create here, never expecting that their paths would cross again in Majorca.

Running an employment agency currently is very stressful and at Sun Search we absorb the tensions of the job seekers. People phone us and are horrified at the lack of jobs on offer.  So many companies have gone out of business and new ones are not employing people on contracts because the costs are too expensive.  We listen daily to both sides of the story and broker what deals we can for clients and staff.  The tour operators coming in with their seasonal jobs are the bright hope for the next few months and we are still talking to young people from the UK who are excited about their summer roles in Majorca in the sun.  From our privileged position we know of exciting restaurants and attractions that are new to Majorca for 2009 that will be employing staff.  As for the few employers that are currently looking for permanent staff they use Sun Search rather than advertise themselves because they are inundated with hundreds of applications.  We take the strain and sift through up to 300 applications for each one vacancy that hits the page.

The danger in this busy life is to become one dimensional and balance goes out of the window.  Jay is frequently heard to utter the words `we didn't come to Majorca to be as busy as we were in London'.  Maybe not but plans for relocation are just that - plans- Life and nature take over and if you are a person that thrives on being busy then you will be, wherever you live.  The balance which includes walks in the mountains, time sitting on the beach or wandering around old town Palma is what I want.   Much as life in our office is interesting there is a big world out there in Majorca that we don't see enough of.
Maybe this year will be different………………

The grandchildren keep us grounded; they haven't had a village celebration for a few weeks so they are ready for their energy to be directed towards Sa Rueta - the Children's Carnival which happens in late February.  This is celebrated in the schools with everyone dressing up and then local towns have their own children's parade.  The costumes occupy much thought and the excesses that precede lent are well planned.  The actors of Soller are thinking about what they should do for Sa Rua - the Adults Carnival.  A good time to inject some fun and balance back into life and a foretaste of spring - it can't come soon enough.
