Changing Places Week 151 W/C 11th January 2009

The snow birds came and climbed the mountains in Soller.  They arrived in droves of cars and the queue to pay at the tunnel entrance stretched as far as the eye could see.  The closure of the mountain road near Lluc because of a landslide meant that the only way to the snow fields and mountain tops was via Soller. Families came to make a day of it with picnic baskets and camera.  The mission was to take pictures of the family in the snow and bring back a small snowman, sitting on the bonnet of the car to prove to friends in the warmer parts of Majorca that the snow really exists.  This was Sunday in our town, endless streams of cars and a carnival atmosphere.  The snow was battling not to melt while everyone had fun and the latecomers had to drive higher and higher to catch the last remnants.  Not like in our bit of North London where skis and toboggans come out on Hampstead Heath as soon as the snow touches down. It was very convenient for the snow to last the weekend in the Soller valley and swell the coffers of the tunnel authorities by €8.80 per visiting car.

Small pleasures and little events make the days beautiful and Emma our four year old granddaughter has made us think about our special skills in life.  `How old were you when you learned to whistle Nan?'  She is very concerned that she is finding whistling so difficult. Her friends at school can all do it and she can't.  We have tried whistling with her and listening to her efforts but we can't answer her question as to why she can't yet do it. The world economy can be coming to a grinding halt and the next president of the USA waiting to be sworn in but the most crucial matter in our family is how you teach a four year old to whistle!

A hero has come to live in our midst and it helps that he is good looking and American!
He happens to be a new doctor at our local health centre and he was working away one day recently in a crowded surgery when a child with his arm out of its socket and a distraught mother appeared. Our hero rushed to the rescue and with a deft twist the arm was back in place.  Grateful mothers and other patients watched his dexterity with awe and the surgery was on the verge of applause. The jungle drums in Soller soon got busy and all the local mums were glad to welcome our superman into their midst. The other great Doctors in the centre could have done the same but our man was in the right place at the right time to earn himself his place in Soller folklore.

The future is green or is it plastic - recycled plastic at that.  The Light Box Bench and its little brother the Stand Alone Sign arrive in Majorca (Soller of course) next week. Recycled plastic, solar powered and ready to be the only advertising medium that people with a conscience will use   There is now no reason to let advertising use the national grid and electricity as the signs we provide are lit by solar power.  There are some rumbles in the corporate world because this invention challenges the accepted norm and the way advertising is going to be perceived in the future.  If, as an advertiser, you can support the saving of the planet by advertising on a product that is 100% environmentally friendly and uses solar power, you will obviously make that choice.   Majorca has been chosen as the launch pad in Europe for this because of the attitude the government and town councils have towards saving the environment.  2009 - the year of small pleasures such as whistling, snow , good looking doctors and huge ground breaking concepts like The Light Box Bench and the brave new world of  recycled, environmentally friendly advertising - all very exciting.
